Our Butler Location

Family Dog Obedience classes are held at 1698 North Main Street Extension, Butler, PA 16001; it is the old Dollar General store. This is approximately 1 mile North of the Clearview Mall and is adjacent to the China Gourmet restaurant. The 8,000 sq. ft. facility is a one-story, with dog-activity friendly flooring. Many new classes will be offered, and the facility is available to rent for individuals or clubs to hold classes or events in the future.

Our Training Philosophies

While a “trend” in purely positive training is passing through some training schools, Family Dog Obedience believes in a blend of positive training methods, paired with “natural dogmanship” techniques to create a balanced training experience for the dog and the owner. You will learn how to utilize this philosophy to praise your dog when the desired action is given, and how to readjust when your dog doesn’t give you what you ask for. Often, it’s your communication skills that need help. Dogs that have trained with us are happy workers, readily understanding what is asked of them, and are rewarded for their best efforts. Some of our mottos include “Don’t blame them, train them!” and “Change the environment, change the behavior.”

Research & Development Team

Val’s own family dogs provide a wealth of information and opportunities to try out new training techniques and philosophies. Every training method that is utilized on your dog has been researched with her own beloved family pets.

About Service/Therapy/ESA Dog Training: What it is and what it is NOT

Family Dog Obedience offers quality training and education for the Family Dog. While we can teach you and your dog to have many of the skills necessary to be a Service Dog, or an Emotional Support Dog, we do not offer any certifications for these titles. We DO offer testing for the Therapy Dog skills through petpartners.org. Due to the current situation with COVID, though, those classes are on hold for now.

Not every dog is a candidate for these types of public activities; often they are purposely bred and selected for the tasks required, with careful consideration for temperament and genetics. A tremendous liability exists for dogs that are ‘fake’ service dogs. A vest does not make a dog into a service dog, and a ‘fake’ service dog makes REAL service dogs/owners encounter difficulties they should not have to deal with.
I’ve compiled some additional information regarding service dogs for your convenience:

  • Interested in learning what a service dog needs to be tested on? From National Service Animal Registry: NSAR Public Access Test for Service Dogs
