Our Butler Location

Family Dog Obedience classes are held at 1698 North Main Street Extension, Butler, PA 16001; it is the old Dollar General store. This is approximately 1 mile North of the Clearview Mall and is adjacent to the China Gourmet restaurant. The 8,000 sq. ft. facility is a one-story, with dog-activity friendly flooring. Many new classes will be offered, and the facility is available to rent for individuals or clubs to hold classes or events in the future.

Our Training Philosophies

While a “trend” in purely positive training is passing through some training schools, Family Dog Obedience believes in a blend of positive training methods, paired with “natural dogmanship” techniques to create a balanced training experience for the dog and the owner. You will learn how to utilize this philosophy to praise your dog when the desired action is given, and how to readjust when your dog doesn’t give you what you ask for. Often, it’s your communication skills that need help. Dogs that have trained with us are happy workers, readily understanding what is asked of them, and are rewarded for their best efforts. Some of our mottos include “Don’t blame them, train them!” and “Change the environment, change the behavior.”

Research & Development Team

Val’s own family dogs provide a wealth of information and opportunities to try out new training techniques and philosophies. Every training method that is utilized on your dog has been researched with her own beloved family pets.

COVID-19 UPDATE

Due to the recent pandemic, (and a LARGE portion of families getting dogs and puppies during this time!), we have had to restructure some of our Entry-level classes for now. This will help reduce the number of students entering the building, and allow us time to meet the demand of students needing classes.

Our first priority for classes that will be offered is aimed at the PUPPY class level. We have temporarily reduced our allowable number of students in these classes to 8 participants, however, one additional family member may attend as an alternate handler. We apologize for these restrictions.

Our website is currently under reconstruction, so please check back for changes often! We are working as quickly as we can to get back to business.

MASKS - must be worn during breaks, and when entering or leaving the building. Once you have reached your work area, you may unmask. Instructors are not wearing masks while teaching, as there is a significant area for social distancing.

CLASS FORMAT - Most class offerings will now be a blend of emails interspersed with 'in-person' classes. We will also be setting up a special Facebook group for our members, which will give you the weekly lessons to be combined with 'in-person" classes.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these unprecedented times.

Stay safe,

Val
